"What If?" For a third year, Child Well-being Initiative organizers invite students Grades 4-12 to response in writing or illustration to: “What if every child in Alberta had a safe home and enough healthy food to eat?” Please see the attached poster for details. 180 touching and perceptive responses from Fort McMurray and Wainwright in the north to Calgary and Cardston in the south have been compiled and circulated throughout United Churches in the province. Please give youth in your community the chance to participate in this worthwhile invitation. Their ideas, suggestions and insights are valued by us all. Student thoughts from past years include: "People can count how many kids live in poverty and write papers about it but what good does that really do?" "People know where these kids live and even what school they go to and someone knows their names but day after day--- those kids are still having troubles." "People don’t necessarily need more money to fix their poverty problems: maybe they need the knowledge and support. They feel helpless and hopeless." "It is the adults' responsibility to do a better job. We need to break this cycle of poverty." For further information or clarification contact: Sharon (e-mail: prenevsh "at" telusplanet.net ) Co-chair, Alberta & North West Conference Child Well-being Initiative (CWBI) Women of the United Church. May 8 – 10, 2012, in Edmonton CHANGING THE CONVERSATION: A Third Way for Congregations with the Rev. Anthony B. Robinson, well known speaker, teacher, preacher, Alban Institute author, and congregational consultant. This ecumenical event is the 5th annual Western Canada Spring Training Institute for Church Leaders sponsored by Conciliation Services Canada. Changing the culture of a group, institution or congregation has a lot to do with changing the conversation - what we talk about and what we don't talk about. A good part of what leaders do is shape the agenda for congregational conversation and action. In this seminar we will focus on a series of crucial conversations that congregations need to engage, in order to respond with vitality, effectiveness, and faithfulness to our postmodern culture and its challenges. Particular attention will be paid to the power of purpose and the steps we can take to help the congregations we serve to be "on purpose." Cost: $450 including taxes, lunches, study materials. For more information/registration, please go to www.conciliationservices.ca , call 519-742-2280 x 1, or email nancressman "at" sympatico.ca Nan Cressman, Conciliation Services Canada, 64 Rosedale Ave., Kitchener, ON N2H 1J4 Top |
